Bob Shopes, Principal
My path was unorthodox compared to your average financial advisor. I was a research scientist with an AB from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois and founded several San Diego biotech companies.  During a break between starting companies I explored stock investing which I always liked as a hobby. Looking at it from a scientist point of view I found that almost nothing worked. Stock picking, market timing and technical analysis were all unproven, or worse, shown to be detrimental. The only things that were proven were portfolio diversification and risk/reward balance. I also found, much to my surprise that I really enjoyed taking to people about their personal finances. I decided to take this seriously, passed the exams to become a broker and then a CFP®.  After several years at a brokerage firm I started Favrile Financial as a solo registered investment advisor in 2017.

​I only take clients I enjoy talking to and that I think I can help. I am also committed to limiting the number of clients to thirty families. This allows me dedicate myself to those clients and leaves me with sufficient time to do research and continuing education on personal finance.

I am a Del Mar resident, married to a native San Diegan and the proud father of college age twin boys.
